Reduce Echo with Google Meet’s Troubleshooting Panel

Meet can detect echo and provide instructions in its troubleshooting panel. Echo often involves a loudspeaker feeding sound back into a microphone, including two devices connected in the same room. Use the meeting’s recommendations and isolate the active audio paths before making broad computer changes.

Open the echo guidance

During the affected meeting, choose More options and Troubleshooting & help. Under Audio & video devices, read any instructions about echo. A red dot on More options can signal a detected issue, but Google says it appears only once a day. Its absence is not confirmation that the call is healthy.

Remove one feedback path

Try headphones, reduce the loudspeaker volume, or mute when you are not speaking. In Meet’s audio controls, confirm that the microphone and speaker belong to the intended arrangement. Google warns that mismatched microphones and external speakers can cause echo. If a conference-room system already handles the conversation, check whether another nearby laptop also joined with live microphone and speakers.

Verify with another participant

Ask a remote participant whether the echo stops after each change. A person causing the feedback may not hear the same problem locally, so their own impression is not sufficient. For a second screen beside room hardware, Companion mode provides collaboration tools with laptop meeting audio disabled. Use that arrangement when it fits the room’s setup. Record which device carried the audio when the echo disappeared. If it persists with a single intended headset connection, retain the panel’s observations and ask your support team to inspect the configuration. Reintroduce devices carefully so the working arrangement remains clear.
