Mark a Google Calendar Event Free or Busy

Free or Busy in Google Calendar expresses availability for scheduling. It is separate from event privacy: a meeting can have hidden details yet still block time. Choose the availability state that reflects whether you can actually accept another appointment during that interval.

Inspect the event’s availability

Open the event on a computer and enter its editing view. Locate the availability control showing Free or Busy and choose the intended state. Confirm the event’s date and duration first, particularly for an all-day entry that could affect a complete day.

Keep visibility separate

Review the event’s Default, Public, or Private visibility independently. Google’s visibility guidance explains how calendar permissions interact with these choices. Marking an event Free should not be presented as making its details private or removing it from every viewer’s calendar.

Likewise, a Private Busy event can still communicate that you are unavailable. People with stronger permissions may retain access to details according to the actual calendar rules.

Verify scheduling consequences

Save and inspect the event, then review the relevant scheduling or booking-page behavior. Google’s appointment guidance uses Busy events on checked calendars to prevent conflicting availability, so a Free entry can have a different effect. Confirm that the booking schedule actually checks that calendar rather than assuming the state alone controls every appointment page. Use the setting to represent real availability accurately; it should not be changed merely to make a conflict disappear visually while the underlying appointment still requires your attendance. Confirm the saved availability state.
