Group Google Slides API Changes in a Batch Update

A Slides API batch update groups multiple changes into one request. This can reduce round trips and support dependent operations, such as creating a text box and then inserting text into it. Build the batch in a clear order and verify the response before treating the presentation as complete.

Order dependent requests

Place creation operations before requests that refer to the new objects. Google’s batch guidance says subrequests are processed in their listed order. Explicit valid object IDs can let later requests refer to an element created earlier in the same batch.

Understand validation and replies

Google documents atomic validation: if a subrequest is invalid, the update is unsuccessful and none of the dependent batch changes are applied. The response’s replies array follows request order, and operations without a specific response occupy an empty entry.

Do not assume every reply contains a new object ID. Match each response to its corresponding request type and retain the identifiers that the integration actually needs.

Verify the saved result

Read the relevant presentation state after a successful batch and inspect the rendered slides. If the client loses the response, reconcile the actual state before retrying creation operations; a blind retry can produce duplicates or ID conflicts. Atomic validation does not make an ambiguous network outcome automatically safe to repeat. Test a small batch on a disposable presentation first. Confirm content, geometry, and source data separately, because structural request success does not establish an accurate or audience-ready deck. Inspect the returned presentation identifier.
