A template-based Slides API workflow can combine approved design with user or system data. Protect the master template by creating an instance before performing replacements. Google’s merge guide explicitly advises manipulating a copy rather than changing the primary template for each generated presentation.
Prepare unambiguous tags
Design the template in the Slides editor and place unique text tags in the intended content areas. Use strings unlikely to appear in ordinary prose, such as {{client_summary}}. Identify every required field and decide how missing input should be handled before generating a deck.
Copy and replace deliberately
Use the appropriate Drive API copy operation to create the presentation instance. Apply Slides replaceAllText requests for text substitutions and the documented image-replacement requests when images are part of the workflow. Keep account authorization and file permissions appropriate for the intended user.
Check the replacement scope. A repeated tag may intentionally appear on several slides, while an accidental occurrence in explanatory text can cause an unwanted replacement.
Validate the generated instance
Scan the output for unresolved tags, missing names, unexpected duplicate wording, and incorrect numeric formatting. Open the deck to inspect long text, image proportions, and layout. Keep the original template unchanged and record the template version used by each instance. An API merge is not a factual review of the supplied data or an approval to distribute it. Test with non-sensitive examples before connecting production data, and verify that the generated audience file contains only information that its recipients are authorized to receive.
