Gmail can offer an AI Overview at the top of a long conversation, and eligible accounts can also ask Gemini in the side panel to summarize messages. These are related experiences with different access conditions. A missing paid side-panel tool does not necessarily mean conversation summaries are unavailable.
Use the thread’s summary control
Open the intended email conversation. Where available, choose Summarize this email at the top. Google’s dedicated conversation-summary guidance describes availability across account types globally, subject to supported languages and the required smart-feature settings.
Check that you opened the correct conversation and account. If several unrelated messages share similar subjects, confirm the participants and dates rather than relying on the title alone.
Read the summary beside the source
Use the overview to locate decisions, requests, and possible deadlines, then open the relevant replies. Distinguish a proposal from an accepted decision and check whether a later message changes an earlier commitment.
If the summary identifies a task and offers a reminder, review the date and details before creating it. A generated reminder is a separate saved task, not proof that the underlying action has been performed. Google provides controls to edit, complete, or reopen those reminders.
Handle missing or unreliable summaries
Confirm language and smart-feature requirements on the dedicated help page. If the summary is wrong, read the original thread and use the feedback control. Broadly disabling smart features can affect other experiences, so inspect that consequence before changing a setting merely to hide a summary.
For important decisions, retain the original message, sender, and date in your own notes. Do not use the AI Overview as the sole record of an approval, payment instruction, or contractual commitment. The summary is useful for orientation, but the source conversation remains necessary for verifying what was actually said.
