Missing icons, overlapping controls, or an unstyled Gmail page often point to a browser or resource-loading problem. They do not establish that messages were lost. Check the interface separately from the contents of one unusual email.
Compare the page with an ordinary message
Open the inbox and a short plain message. If the navigation and controls look normal but one email is distorted, its sender’s formatting may be the issue. If the whole interface is broken, record a screenshot with private data hidden.
Check whether other websites load normally, and note when the problem began. A new browser extension, a managed web filter, or an interrupted update may help explain the timing.
Test browser support and resource filtering
Use an updated supported browser with JavaScript and cookies enabled for Gmail. Compare a clean browser profile or another supported browser. If that works, temporarily disable page-modifying or content-blocking extensions in the affected profile and test again.
Do not disable antivirus, safe browsing, or a company gateway for the entire device. If an approved filter appears to block required resources, ask its administrator to investigate the specific request and policy. A broad allowlist for every Google-related domain is not a careful diagnosis.
Restore the smallest necessary setting
Re-enable extensions individually to find the one that changes Gmail’s appearance. Check whether a custom zoom level contributes to the overlap, while preserving accessibility settings you need. Reload only after protecting unsent work.
If site-data repair is eventually necessary, first account for Gmail offline messages and queued mail. Clearing all browser data can affect unrelated services and remove local content. For a persistent issue across clean browsers, supply support with the browser version, affected view, time, and comparison results. Avoid copying private message HTML into public troubleshooting forums.
