If Gmail loads but its buttons do not respond, test whether the failure affects one control or the entire interface. Browser extensions and unsupported browser behavior can interfere with Gmail without stopping the page from opening.
Protect the current action first
If Send appears unresponsive, do not keep clicking it. Check the sending indicator, Sent, and Drafts to establish whether the message already left. Preserve any unsaved text before reloading or moving to another browser.
Try a harmless control such as opening Settings or another inbox category. If only one operation fails, note its prerequisites and any policy message. A disabled button can mean that an action is unavailable, rather than that the browser is broken.
Compare a supported browser without extensions
Update the browser and confirm that Gmail’s cookies and JavaScript are permitted. Test the same action in another supported browser or a clean profile. For Chrome, use the extensions management page to temporarily switch off extensions you installed.
Private browsing is not a guaranteed extension-free test: some extensions can be allowed there. Managed security extensions may also be enforced by an administrator. Record those limits instead of trying to remove organization controls.
Identify the interfering component
If the control works without extensions, restore them one at a time and repeat the harmless test. Common categories worth checking include content blockers and tools that modify Gmail’s page. Do not assume an extension is safe merely because it has worked for months.
Keep a record of the extension name, version, and browser version for its vendor or your IT team. If the issue remains in a clean supported browser, compare another device and check service status. Avoid installing an alternative Gmail modification tool as a workaround; it can add another cause and require access to sensitive mail.
