A Gmail address on an iPhone can be used in Google’s Gmail app, Apple’s Mail app, or both. The email provider and the app are different parts of the setup. Identify which app you are actually using before following notification, synchronization, or account-removal instructions.
Identify the app and the account
- Check the app’s name and icon instead of inferring it from the address displayed in a message.
- Open its account list and confirm the full Gmail or Google Workspace address.
- Compare a known message with the same account in Gmail on the web. A combined inbox may include other providers as well.
Installing Gmail does not automatically remove the account from Apple Mail. Both clients can connect to the same server mailbox. A message read, moved, or deleted in one can therefore change in the other after synchronization; the apps are not necessarily independent backup copies.
Use the settings for the app you identified
For Apple Mail, current Apple instructions use Settings, Apps, Mail, Mail Accounts. Fetch New Data is part of that Mail account setup, with availability and delivery behavior depending on the account. Do not assume every provider supports the same push options.
For Google’s Gmail app, use its own Menu and Settings. Google’s iPhone troubleshooting also identifies iOS Background App Refresh for Gmail. Changing Apple’s Mail fetch schedule is not a Gmail-app synchronization repair.
Keep default-app choice separate from mailbox setup
The default email app determines which supported app opens links to compose email. It does not migrate messages, change your Google subscription, or disconnect the other mail client. Check the From address after a compose window opens.
If you decide to stop using one client, first preserve local drafts, queued messages, and any mail not verified on the server. Removing an account from an app is a separate operation from deleting the Google Account itself. Make one change at a time and verify incoming mail in the client you intend to keep.
