The top selection box in Gmail usually starts by selecting the conversations on the current page. For a label containing more mail, read the selection notice and use the offered all-conversations link only when you intend that wider scope. A page selection and a label-wide selection are different operations.
Expand selection deliberately on the web
- Open the intended label or run the precise search in Gmail on a computer.
- Check the top selection box.
- Read the notice showing how many conversations on that page are selected.
- If Gmail offers Select all conversations in the label or matching search, click it only after verifying the scope.
If the notice is absent, inspect the current view and selection rather than assuming the entire mailbox is selected. The label name, active search, and conversation-view setting all affect what you are acting on.
Choose an action with an understood effect
Apply a label or mark mail read for a first low-risk test. Verify a few messages from different pages afterward. A conversation-level action may involve several messages, so inspect mixed threads before using an irreversible or broad operation.
Delete moves selected mail to Trash; it is not the same as removing the label you are viewing. Archive removes inbox placement but preserves mail. Do not confuse a bulk cleanup with a harmless change to the sidebar.
Verify and stop if the scope is unclear
After the action, repeat the original search or open the label again. A result set can shrink because the messages no longer meet a condition such as unread, not because they were lost.
Mobile Select all behavior is platform-specific and should not be assumed to match the web notice. For thousands of records, use the computer interface and an explicit reviewed selection. Keep important records and organizational retention requirements in mind before deletion. If the selected count is unexpectedly large, clear the selection and narrow the query instead of proceeding in the hope that Gmail will ask another confirmation later.
