Gmail’s yellow importance marker reflects a prediction about which messages matter to you. You can correct individual decisions, stop using past actions for predictions, or hide the indicators. None of those choices blocks mail or guarantees that your inbox will contain every urgent message.
Correct a specific importance decision
On the web, hover over the marker to see the explanation Gmail provides. Click the marker to change an incorrect classification. Google says those corrections help Gmail learn your preferences.
The signals include whom you email, which messages you open or answer, and how you handle similar mail. A correction is feedback, not a promise that every future message from that sender will receive the same treatment.
Change prediction or visibility settings
- Open Gmail in a browser and go to Settings, then See all settings.
- Open the Inbox tab and find Importance markers.
- To stop behavior-based prediction, choose Don’t use my past actions to predict which messages are important.
- To hide the visible indicators, choose No markers where offered, then save changes.
Google notes that these settings are changed in a browser, and the chosen importance settings also apply to the app. Hiding an indicator is different from removing every existing importance classification.
Check rules and preserve a manual review path
If a whole class of mail is always important or never important, inspect Filters and blocked addresses for rules setting that status. Adjust only the rule that explains the behavior after testing its search.
Search is:important to inspect currently marked mail. Compare that list with known deadlines and required communications. Use a dedicated label, star, or task system when a message requires explicit follow-up.
Do not use importance as a security verdict. A phishing message can look urgent, while a legitimate account notice may lack the yellow marker. Continue reviewing the rest of the inbox and relevant categories. If you use Priority Inbox, check its section choices too, because changing the visibility of markers does not necessarily redesign the entire layout.
