A missing Gmail label can be hidden, nested under a collapsed parent, or outside a collapsed navigation panel. Check visibility before recreating labels or moving messages. Hiding a label from the sidebar does not remove its messages or stop an existing filter from using it.
Expand the navigation first
- In Gmail on a computer, click the top-left Menu button if the navigation is collapsed.
- Look for More and expand it where needed.
- Expand any parent label that may contain the missing nested label.
- Confirm that you are in the correct Google account.
A narrow window can make the sidebar less prominent. This is different from a deleted label. Avoid creating a second similarly named label before you have checked the existing list.
Review the label’s visibility setting
Open Settings, See all settings, then Labels. Find the system or custom label and review its Show or Hide choice. Select Show for a label you want in the navigation.
The sidebar list and the label indicators displayed on messages are separate visual concerns where Gmail offers separate controls. Check the heading of the setting you are changing rather than assuming every Show option affects the same place.
Verify the underlying mail and rules
Use a known sender or a label: search to find messages that should belong to the label. If the label exists but is empty, inspect the actual message memberships and relevant filters. New replies do not automatically inherit a manually applied label from all earlier messages in a conversation.
If the label was removed, its messages may still exist without that classification. Search for them before attempting to rebuild the organization. A missing sidebar entry alone is not evidence of account compromise or data loss.
Phone navigation differs from the computer sidebar, so check the intended account’s menu there separately. Do not clear app data or delete mail to fix visibility. Keep any recovery or missing-message investigation distinct from the simpler task of showing a hidden navigation item.
