Nested Gmail labels create a hierarchy in the sidebar, such as Projects with separate client labels beneath it. This is an organizational structure, not a set of physical folders. Do not assume that a message in a child label automatically acquires every parent label.
Create a child label
- Open Gmail on a computer and create the intended parent label if it does not exist.
- Choose Create new label again and enter the child’s name.
- Select Nest label under and choose the parent.
- Create it, then expand the parent in the sidebar to inspect the result.
For example, Projects can contain a Client Alpha label. The example is only a naming scheme; it does not assign mail automatically. Apply the child label to a known message and verify where that message appears.
Check membership and searches explicitly
A nesting relationship helps navigation, but labels remain message classifications. If you need a message accessible under both a parent and a child label, apply the desired labels and confirm the result rather than relying on folder-style inheritance.
For searches or filters, use the full nested label name that Gmail provides or selects in its interface. Names with spaces or a hierarchy can be easy to mistype. Run the query against a known message before saving a bookmark or making it a work queue.
Maintain the hierarchy without destructive actions
Use a label’s sidebar More menu to edit its name or nesting where offered. After restructuring, inspect saved queries and relevant filters. A sidebar reorganization should not be treated as a reason to delete or move the underlying mail in bulk.
When removing labels, read the confirmation carefully, especially where child labels are involved. Removing an organizational label and deleting the messages are separate operations. Connected clients can display Gmail labels as folders, so test their behavior with disposable mail before reorganizing important records from another app. Keep the hierarchy shallow enough that you can still identify the correct project on a small screen.
