Gmail Multiple inboxes displays extra search-based sections within one mailbox. It is useful for separate work queues, such as starred requests and messages carrying an action label. It does not combine several Google accounts or create copies of messages.
Build and test the searches first
Choose simple conditions that represent real work. For example, use is:starred for starred mail and label:Action is:unread for unread mail already carrying an Action label. Create the label first if you intend to use it.
Run each query in Gmail’s search bar and inspect its results before making it a section. A section name is only a caption; naming it Waiting does not automatically identify unanswered messages.
Configure the web layout
- On a computer, open Gmail and click Settings.
- Under Inbox type, choose Multiple inboxes, then Customize.
- Enter each section’s search criteria and a clear section name.
- Choose the maximum page size and the sections’ position, then save changes.
Google specifies that Multiple inboxes setup requires a computer. Do not expect the mobile app to present the identical arrangement or provide the same customization menu.
Verify queues without hiding essential mail
Compare each new section with its direct search results. If one message meets two queries, it can appear in both sections; that is overlapping membership, not duplicate delivery. Decide whether the overlap is useful or refine the queries.
Remember that ordinary search excludes Spam and Trash unless you explicitly include them. Avoid making a broad Spam-inclusive query into a routine action queue where dangerous mail could be mistaken for reviewed work.
Test what happens when you remove a star, mark a message read, or change its label. It should stop matching the relevant condition, even though the email remains stored. For critical follow-ups, use a reliable task or calendar reminder as well. Multiple inboxes organizes what is visible; it does not enforce deadlines, guarantee delivery, or notify another person that you have accepted their request.
