A Gmail Multiple inboxes section displays whatever its search matches, even when the section’s name suggests something narrower. If a queue shows unexpected mail, test its saved query directly. The caption does not assign labels, exclude completed work, or detect unanswered messages automatically.
Compare the saved condition with a direct search
- Open Gmail on a computer and find Settings, Inbox type, Multiple inboxes, then Customize.
- Copy the affected section’s search criteria.
- Run that query in Gmail’s search bar and inspect several unexpected results.
- Check each result’s matching message inside its conversation.
A conversation can contain both matching and nonmatching messages. Google notes that negative searches can still display a thread when at least one message meets the condition. Seeing a starred reply in a result for an unstarred condition is therefore not necessarily a broken query.
Refine only the condition that is wrong
If you want unread inbox mail with a particular label, test label:Action is:unread in:inbox rather than using the label alone. If archived messages belong in the queue, omit the inbox restriction. Use explicit choices instead of adding exclusions until the results merely look smaller.
Sections can overlap. A message that is both starred and labeled Action can appear in two queues without being stored twice. For sender queries, Google’s guidance also notes alias expansion; inspect the exact addresses if the results seem broader than expected.
Check page size and the next state change
The maximum page size limits how much a section shows at once. It is not the total number of matching messages. Compare the full search before concluding that older work vanished.
Save the corrected condition, then change one harmless test message’s star, label, or unread state and verify that the section responds as intended. Multiple inboxes is a computer layout; a phone app need not reproduce it. Avoid deleting or moving messages simply to make a faulty query appear correct.
