Gmail nudges suggest messages you may need to answer or follow up on. They are different from Snooze and from phone notifications. You can control reply reminders and sent-message follow-up suggestions separately without creating an automatic reply.
Change the two nudge controls
- Open Gmail on a computer.
- Go to Settings, then See all settings, and open General.
- Find Nudges and review Suggest emails to reply to and Suggest emails to follow up on.
- Select or clear the options you want, then save changes.
The reply option concerns received messages you may have overlooked. The follow-up option concerns sent messages that may warrant another response. Enabling either option does not send anything on your behalf.
Check conversation view if the reminders are absent
Google states that conversation view must be on for these reminders. Check that setting before assuming the account is malfunctioning. Turning conversation view off also hides nudges, but changes the presentation of your whole mailbox; the dedicated nudge controls are more targeted if grouping should remain enabled.
Suggestions are selective. An enabled setting does not promise a nudge for every unanswered email or at an exact interval. A missing suggestion is not evidence that the recipient replied or that your message failed to send.
Use explicit reminders for deadlines
For a contract renewal, appointment, or promised reply, create an appropriate task or calendar reminder instead of relying exclusively on Gmail’s suggestions. Snooze is useful when you deliberately want a message to reappear later, while notification settings govern device alerts.
If you manage several accounts, confirm which mailbox’s settings you changed. In an organizational or delegated environment, available features can differ. Avoid repeatedly changing account language or reinstalling the app to force a suggestion. Verify the saved web settings and use a manual reminder when the feature is unavailable or unsuitable for a time-critical obligation.
