A Gmail Drive Attachment Says Request Access: Check the Recipient’s Permission

2026年10月28日 by wisechecker

A Drive file linked from Gmail keeps its own access controls. If the recipient sees Request access, the email’s arrival is not the problem to fix: check the identity and permissions used to open the particular Drive file.

Match the email recipient with the signed-in identity

Ask the recipient to confirm which account is active when opening the link. Someone with several Google Accounts may receive the email at one address but open Drive under another.

Check the exact address to which access was granted. A forwarded message or an address on a mailing list does not necessarily give that reader direct permission to the linked file. The message’s visible recipient list and Drive’s actual sharing list are separate records.

Have the owner review the narrowest suitable access

In Drive, the owner or an authorized person should inspect the file’s sharing settings and the recipient’s role. If Gmail displayed an access-check prompt while composing, review what was actually selected rather than assuming any prompt grants access automatically.

Grant access to the intended person or authorized group when that is the approved arrangement. Do not change a sensitive file to Anyone with the link merely because a recipient clicked Request access. Organization policies, ownership rules, or the file’s location may restrict the available choices.

Choose the correct external-recipient route

A non-Gmail address can still identify a Google Account. Separately, an organization may enable visitor sharing for supported file types, letting a non-Google user verify their address through a PIN-based invitation. Neither possibility means every private Drive link is universally readable.

If the current owner cannot authorize sharing, ask for an approved alternative, such as a permitted file copy or a controlled transfer. Do not request someone else’s password or have the recipient sign into the owner’s account.

After a permission change, test opening the exact original link under the intended recipient identity. Confirm whether viewing, commenting, or editing is required. Permission to read the email does not automatically establish permission to edit the document, and a successful test in the owner’s signed-in browser is not a recipient-access test.
