If Gmail places a different address in your reply than the one you expected, inspect the original message’s sender details and Reply-To information. A reply destination can legitimately differ from the visible From address, but an unexpected destination still deserves checking.
Inspect the original message and the draft
Expand the original message’s Show details area and read the full sender and recipient information available. Compare it with the address Gmail populated in your reply. A familiar display name alone does not establish either address’s identity.
Businesses and mailing systems sometimes use a separate address for responses. If the difference is unexpected, confirm the intended destination through a known contact channel before sending private information. Do not trust a request for passwords or payment changes merely because it appears in an existing conversation.
Correct one outgoing reply carefully
Open the reply’s recipient fields and inspect the full address. If you have independently confirmed a different destination, change the appropriate recipient entry and review the message before sending.
Do not add every possible address to Cc as a test. That can disclose the conversation to unintended recipients. If the source message itself is suspicious, preserve it for the appropriate reporting or security review rather than replying with sensitive details.
If replies to your own outgoing mail go elsewhere
On a computer, open Gmail Settings → See all settings → Accounts and Import or Accounts. In Send mail as, inspect the relevant address’s edit settings and any specified reply-to address.
Google distinguishes the default From address from the reply-to setting. Changing only the visible sender identity does not necessarily choose the response destination you intended. Set only an address you control and can use for this purpose, then verify with a non-sensitive test.
Separate configuration from compromise
A known alias or service configuration can explain the difference. An unfamiliar change to your own settings needs a security review. Keep the distinction clear: do not reset every account setting for a legitimate reply destination, and do not dismiss an unauthorized destination as a harmless display problem.
