Google does not guarantee SMS verification for every sign-in or security action. If the text-message option is missing, identify the kind of challenge and use an established method the account actually offers.
Check whether Google chose another method
Google may send a prompt to an eligible signed-in phone rather than offer a text. A passkey can also satisfy sign-in without a separate SMS challenge.
Select Try another way when available and review the choices. Do not assume the account is unprotected merely because the familiar text-message screen did not appear.
Consider the request’s security requirements
Google’s troubleshooting guide says an unusual sign-in context can affect whether text codes are available. Some sensitive operations, including approving certain new or at-risk sign-in methods, require an already trusted passkey or physical security key.
Those checks are not SMS-delivery problems. Changing carrier settings or requesting messages on a different website will not satisfy a challenge that specifically requires stronger proof.
Check what was enrolled
If you can still access the account, review Security & sign-in → 2-Step Verification. A number saved only as contact or recovery information does not establish that it is an available SMS second step.
A newly added verification number may take up to seven days to become trusted. Read the saved method’s status and preserve another working option during activation.
Account type and policy matter
A work or school administrator may control permitted methods. Accounts using additional protection can have different requirements from ordinary personal accounts. Follow the account’s instructions and the administrator’s policy rather than attempting to force SMS to appear.
Do not turn off 2-Step Verification, remove every stronger method, or attach a temporary public phone number to manipulate the choice of challenge.
If no usable method appears
Use official account recovery from a familiar device and browser, or contact the administrator for a managed identity. An article listing possible methods cannot guarantee that any one of them will be offered in your particular attempt.
After access returns, establish a suitable independent backup. Treat SMS as one possible method with its own limitations, rather than the only route every future Google security screen must provide.
