Sharing Google One storage does not automatically let family members read your Gmail, open your Drive files, or browse your private photos. Storage sharing and permission to view content are separate. A family member can, however, see certain membership and storage-use information.
Know what the family can see
Google’s guidance says family members can see information such as each member’s name, photo, email address, and use of shared storage. A storage-usage figure is not access to the messages or files using that space.
Files become available to another person if you share them through an applicable product’s controls, use a shared device or session, or grant another kind of access. Check the actual sharing and sign-in arrangement if someone can see content you thought was private.
Understand the storage arrangement
Google One family sharing supplies eligible shared capacity to the family accounts. It does not merge their mailboxes or transfer file ownership to the plan manager. Plan features and eligibility vary, and not every Google One plan supports family sharing.
Open the Google One family and storage settings to confirm the plan, sharing status, and accounts involved. Do not give another person your account password to make storage sharing work; each member should use their own Google identity.
Keep other permissions separate
A family manager, a Google One plan manager, and a parent supervising a child are different roles. Family Link can provide separate child-account management powers under its own age and account-history rules. Those powers do not arise simply because the child uses shared storage.
Likewise, Gmail delegation or a shared signed-in browser can expose mail independently of the Google One plan. If access is unexpected, review those settings and device sessions rather than assuming the storage subscription caused it.
Plan before ending storage sharing
If a member loses shared capacity, they may exceed their remaining allowance and be unable to store new data. Review the applicable storage guidance and arrange sufficient capacity before leaving a group or stopping sharing. Ending the sharing arrangement does not automatically delete the person’s Google Account or move its private content to the plan manager.
