If Notion AI reports that it cannot read a database, keep the original database intact. An “indexed” or completion indicator elsewhere in your workflow does not identify the reason an AI request failed.
Do not use a supposed per-database AI off/on switch, delete the original after testing a duplicate, or export and reimport it as a routine fix. Those steps are not a documented way to rebuild an “AI-readable layer” and can damage the structure your team relies on.
1. Establish which data and feature are failing
Record the exact message and whether it came from personal Agent, Enterprise Search, an AI block or an Autofill property. If a connector reported indexing complete, identify that connector too. Do not assume one feature’s status describes all the others.
Then check one ordinary record:
- Open the database and one expected row with the same account used for the AI request.
- Confirm the row’s title, relevant property values and page text are visible.
- If you are in a linked view, locate the original data source and check access there. The containing page’s sharing does not independently grant access to the original source.
- Note whether the error affects one database, one property or unrelated pages as well.
See Notion’s linked data source guide. Do not grant edit rights or publish the source just to run a reading test.
2. Try a small read-only query before a large analysis
Reference the original database or one known record explicitly. Ask for a single value you can verify: “What status is recorded for task Atlas-12? Link the source and say if it is unavailable. Do not change anything.”
Personal Agent can query database properties; Enterprise Search also supports views and relations. A blanket claim that formulas, rollups or every linked view are unreadable is not an adequate diagnosis. Check the current Agent and Enterprise Search guidance for your feature, including source and model selection.
If one record works but the whole-database question fails, reduce the requested scope and specify the properties and conditions. Verify the returned rows rather than assuming the result is complete. If the issue is Autofill, test and inspect that property’s configuration separately; a chat response does not prove an automated property update succeeded.
3. Protect relations and other dependencies
A CSV file is not a complete repair image of a Notion database. Relation properties export as text URLs, and importing that CSV does not re-establish those relations. Duplication can also change two-way relation behavior. See Notion’s relation export and duplication limitations.
For that reason, do not replace the original with a duplicate merely because one AI query works on the copy. The duplicate’s success does not establish what failed, and a familiar database name does not prove that links, integrations or references now point to the replacement.
If support needs a reproduction, prefer a small, non-sensitive test case approved by the owner. Keep it clearly separate from production data. Any actual migration should have an inventory of dependencies, a verified recovery plan and the owner’s explicit approval; it is not a first-line AI troubleshooting step.
4. Use the error evidence to choose the next step
- The record will not open: have the owner review the intended source or page access.
- Nothing using AI works: check the actual plan, allowance or service message. Do not assume a missing fictional database toggle means you must buy an add-on.
- Only a specific source or property fails: preserve the example and identify its content type and source location.
- The same small query repeatedly fails despite readable data: send the workspace owner or Notion support a redacted record link, time, feature, exact prompt and error.
The Notion AI FAQ describes current availability and usage allowances. Follow a confirmed account or service issue when one is displayed, but avoid unrelated connection resets or structural edits.
After a targeted fix, repeat the original small test and check the source evidence. Retain the original database throughout; a usable AI answer should be an outcome of the repair, not a reason to destroy the previous data.
