Use the Google Slides Laser Pointer During a Talk

The Google Slides laser pointer is a presentation aid for drawing attention to a visible detail. It is useful for a chart point or diagram element that the speaker is currently discussing. Use it sparingly so the audience can follow the explanation without chasing unnecessary movement.

Enable the pointer

Start the slideshow on a computer and open the controls at the bottom of the presentation window. Choose the laser pointer option. Google’s shortcut guidance also lists L as a toggle during presentation.

Point to meaningful content

Move the pointer deliberately to the relevant label or visual element. Name the item in your narration so viewers who cannot follow a small moving pointer still understand the reference. Avoid circling several unrelated areas while describing only one of them.

The pointer is different from the pen annotation tool. Google’s presenting guidance describes pen marks that remain during the current presentation and disappear after it ends; do not assume a pointer movement creates a permanent annotation.

Check visibility and delivery

Rehearse on the intended display and, when relevant, through the actual screen-sharing route. Confirm that the pointer is visible to the audience rather than only on your own screen. Toggle it off when it no longer serves the explanation. If a small detail needs sustained attention, a clearer label or enlarged view may be better than repeated pointing. The pointer should supplement explicit wording and a readable slide, not compensate for text or data that the audience cannot otherwise distinguish.
