Why Fediverse Replies Do Not Appear in the Threads App

This design prevents spam and harassment from external servers, but it also means legitimate replies are hidden. The Threads app shows only replies from other Threads users in the main conversation. If the Fediverse sharing toggle is off, or if your Instagram profile is set to private, Threads blocks all incoming Fediverse interactions entirely. Steps to Make Fediverse Replies Visible

Follow these steps to ensure Fediverse replies appear in your Threads app. Perform them in the order listed.

1. Enable Fediverse sharing in Threads settings
   Open the Threads app. Tap the profile icon in the bottom-right corner. Tap the two-line menu icon in the top-right corner. Select Settings. Tap Account. Tap Fediverse sharing. Toggle the switch to On. This allows your posts to be shared to Fediverse servers and allows replies from those servers to reach your inbox.
2. Set your Instagram profile to public
   Threads requires a linked public Instagram profile for federation to work. Open the Instagram app. Tap your profile icon. Tap the three-line menu icon in the top-right corner. Tap Settings and privacy. Tap Account privacy. Make sure the Private account toggle is Off. If it is On, tap it to turn it Off. Return to the Threads app and force-close it by swiping it away from the app switcher. Reopen Threads.
3. Check the Threads inbox for Fediverse replies
   In the Threads app, tap the bell icon in the top-right corner. This opens your activity inbox. Tap the Requests tab if you see one. Fediverse replies appear either in the main inbox or under Requests. Tap any reply to view it. You can approve it by tapping the Approve button, which moves the reply to the main conversation thread. If you do not see the reply, it may still be pending on the Fediverse server.
4. Verify federation status from the external account
   Log in to the Mastodon or other Fediverse account that sent the reply. Open the original post from your Threads account. Confirm that the reply was sent to the correct Threads post and that the delivery status shows as delivered. 5. Test federation with a fresh post
   Create a new public post in Threads. Wait 5 minutes. Ask a friend on Mastodon to reply to that post. Check your Threads inbox again. New replies from Fediverse servers should appear within 10 minutes. If they do not, repeat steps 1 through 3.

If Threads Still Has Issues After the Main Fix

If you enabled Fediverse sharing and set your Instagram profile to public but still see no replies, check that the external Fediverse server is not blocking Threads. Some Mastodon instances block Threads by default. Ask the sender to check their instance’s federation blocklist. If the instance blocks Threads, the reply will never reach your inbox. The sender can use a different Mastodon instance that allows federation with Threads.

Fediverse replies appear in inbox but not in the main conversation

This is by design. Threads does not automatically merge Fediverse replies into the main reply thread. You must manually approve each reply from the inbox. After you tap Approve, the reply becomes visible in the main conversation for all Threads users. If you do not approve it, only you can see it in the inbox.
