Start a Google Meet Transcript Without Starting Video Recording

Google Meet can save a transcript without starting a video recording. These are separate meeting tools: a transcript captures spoken words as text, while recording saves the meeting’s video composition. Select the feature your group agreed to use and inspect both statuses when capture begins.

Confirm permission before starting

Use an eligible meeting and a supported language with sufficient host and organization Drive storage. With Host Management on, the host or a co-host must start transcription. When it is off, someone in the host’s domain can do so. Inform participants that spoken discussion will be saved, and follow any explicit consent prompt required by the administrator.

Start the transcript from Meeting tools

On a computer, join the intended video meeting. At the bottom right, select Meeting tools, Transcribe, and Start transcription. In the confirmation, choose Start. Check that the Transcripts icon appears at the top right for meeting participants. Do not substitute the Recording start control; it creates a different artifact and a different capture scope.

Check what is active and later saved

Inspect recording and note-taking indicators separately, especially if the organizer configured automatic meeting records. Starting only the transcript does not prove those other features were previously off. The transcript contains spoken words, not the meeting chat. It is saved in the organizer’s Google Meet folder in Drive, inside the relevant meeting subfolder, and may require processing time. When finished, stop transcription through the same tool and verify its status. Review the resulting document for the intended captured segment before treating it as a complete record. A saved transcript is automated text, so confirm consequential names, numbers, and decisions with the responsible participants.
