When to use ratios vs. fixed amounts

Split a bill equally, by ratio, or with fixed amounts

Divide meals, trips, shared purchases, or household costs. Give everyone the same ratio, assign a larger or smaller share, or fix an amount for selected participants before distributing the remainder.

Choose a rounding unit from $0.01 to $1. The tool can assign the rounding difference to the organizer so the collection total exactly matches the bill, or leave the difference visible.

Explain weighted shares

Use ratios such as 1.5 to 1 instead of guessing separate amounts.

Combine fixed and weighted amounts

Set a participant to $20 and divide only the remaining balance.

Track the rounding adjustment

See the calculated amount, final amount, and difference for each person.

How to calculate weighted shares

  1. Enter the final bill totalUse the amount after discounts, tips, fees, and taxes as applicable.
  2. Add participantsUse names, initials, or roles that make sense to the group.
  3. Set ratiosUse 1 for a normal share, 1.5 for a larger share, or any agreed positive value.
  4. Add fixed amounts if neededFixed participants are excluded from the ratio calculation.
  5. Choose roundingUse cents for electronic payments or a larger practical unit for cash.
  6. Verify the totalConfirm the difference is $0.00 before sharing the result.

How the calculation works

Without fixed amounts, each theoretical share is total × person ratio ÷ sum of ratios. With fixed amounts, those amounts are subtracted first and only the remainder is distributed.

Each flexible share is rounded to the selected unit. If organizer adjustment is enabled, the rounding difference is applied only to participants without a fixed amount so the final total matches the bill.

Avoid disputes about rounding

Rounding up can create a surplus and rounding down can create a shortfall. Decide whether the organizer absorbs the difference or whether the group keeps a visible balance.

Ratios do not replace agreement. Explain the rule before collecting money, especially when roles, attendance time, or consumption are used to set different shares.

Notes for sharing the split result

Copied results include participant names. When sending to group chats, avoid unnecessary real names, roles, or burden reasons. CSV includes differences from theoretical amounts; treat it as a record for the settlement organizer and limit its distribution.

When using payment apps, confirm the recipient and deadline separately, not just the amount. This tool only calculates amounts; it does not send money, request payments, settle, or notify participants.

No data is sent from your device

Total payment, participant names, ratios, fixed amounts, rounding, and result table creation are all processed in your browser on this page. No calculation data is sent to WiseChecker servers or external APIs, and nothing is auto-saved in the browser.

If you save results as CSV, the file remains in your device’s download folder. On shared computers, check the save location and cloud sync settings, and delete unnecessary files appropriately.
