A Sign in with Google button does not, by itself, mean an app can read all your Gmail or Drive data. Google distinguishes basic sign-in, access to Google data, and linking an outside service so Google can use its features.
Sign in with Google identifies you to the app
This sign-in method can share basic profile information, such as your name, email address, and profile picture, with consent. The app uses it to authenticate you or create an account.
Google says it does not share your Google password with the linked app. Entering that password directly into an unrelated app’s own form is not equivalent to Google’s supported sign-in flow.
Data access is an additional permission
An app can request access to particular Google products or data, such as Calendar events, Gmail, or Drive. The permission screen should explain the requested access.
Read whether it can view, copy, create, edit, or delete information. Permission to use basic identity information and permission to manage account data have different consequences.
Account Linking works in another direction
Google Account Linking can let a Google product access features of an outside account, such as a music service. That differs from the outside app reading Google data.
One provider can have more than one type of relationship with the same Google Account. Review each type rather than assuming one link represents every permission.
Inspect the connection you actually have
- Open Google’s linked-app settings through the official account guide.
- Confirm the selected Google Account.
- Select the provider and read each connection’s details.
- Compare the access with the feature you intended to use.
- Remove an unnecessary or unauthorized relationship through its specific control.
Google also provides controls for agent access to linked apps. Removing an agent’s permission does not automatically disconnect every underlying account link.
Check the provider’s data policy
Revoking access does not necessarily delete information already copied by the provider. Read its privacy and deletion procedures separately. Before removing your only sign-in route, establish another supported way into the existing app account.
For a managed identity, the administrator may restrict which apps or permissions are allowed. A consent button appearing on a personal account does not establish that the same access is approved for organization data.
