Outlook Conversation History Folder Missing After Teams Chat: Fix

After a Microsoft Teams chat, the Conversation History folder in Outlook may disappear from the folder pane. This happens when the folder is accidentally deleted, moved, or hidden due to a synchronization error between Teams and Exchange. The folder stores copies of Teams chat messages in your mailbox, and its absence prevents new chat history from being saved. This article explains why the folder goes missing and provides steps to restore it so that chat history continues to sync to Outlook.

Why the Conversation History Folder Disappears in Outlook

The Conversation History folder is a hidden system folder in your Exchange mailbox. It is created automatically when Microsoft Teams is configured to save chat messages. Three common reasons cause it to vanish from the folder list:

Accidental Deletion or Move

You may have deleted the folder while cleaning up your mailbox. Outlook does not warn you that Conversation History is a system folder. Moving the folder into another folder using drag-and-drop also hides it from the expected location.

Folder Pane View Settings

The Conversation History folder sits at the same level as the Inbox. If your folder pane is set to show only Favorites or a limited set of folders, Conversation History may be hidden. Switching the folder pane to show all folders restores visibility.

Teams Chat Saving Disabled

If the Teams setting to save chat messages is turned off, Exchange removes the Conversation History folder after a sync interval. Re-enabling the setting prompts Teams to recreate the folder.

Steps to Restore the Missing Conversation History Folder

Follow these steps in order. After each step, check if the folder reappears in the folder pane before moving to the next step.

1. Show All Folders in the Folder Pane
   In Outlook, click View on the ribbon. In the Layout group, click Folder Pane and select Normal or All Folders. This reveals hidden folders including Conversation History. If the folder appears, skip the remaining steps.
2. Expand the Folder List
   In the folder pane, click the triangle or chevron next to your mailbox name at the top. This expands the full folder tree. Look for a folder named Conversation History below the Inbox. If found, right-click it and select Show in Favorites to keep it visible.
3. Recover Deleted Items from the Server
   Click the Folder tab on the ribbon. In the Clean Up group, click Recover Deleted Items. A dialog box opens showing items deleted in the last 30 days. Locate Conversation History in the list. Select it, click Recover Selected Items, and then click OK. The folder returns to its original location.
4. Re-enable Chat Saving in Teams
   Open Microsoft Teams. Click your profile picture at the top right and select Settings. Go to General. Under the Chat section, check the box for Save chat messages (the exact label may be Automatically save my chat messages or Save chat history). Close the settings window. Wait 5 minutes. In Outlook, press F5 to refresh the folder list. The Conversation History folder should appear.
5. Repair the Outlook Mailbox
   If the folder is still missing, run the Outlook Inbox Repair Tool. Close Outlook. Open File Explorer and navigate to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\root\Office16 (or the equivalent Office version folder). Double-click SCANPST.EXE. Browse to your Outlook data file (.pst or .ost) and click Start. After the scan, click Repair. Restart Outlook.
6. Create the Folder Manually
   As a last resort, create a new folder with the exact name Conversation History. Right-click your mailbox name at the top of the folder pane and select New Folder. Type Conversation History and press Enter. This folder will start collecting new Teams chat history, but old history will not appear.

If the Conversation History Folder Still Does Not Appear

When the main steps do not restore the folder, check these additional scenarios.

Outlook is in Cached Exchange Mode with a Small Cache Period

Cached Exchange Mode limits how much data is synchronized to the local OST file. If the cache period is set to 1 month or 3 months, older folders may be hidden. Go to File > Account Settings > Account Settings. Select your Exchange account and click Change. Under Offline Settings, move the slider to All or set it to 12 months. Click Next and restart Outlook.

Teams and Outlook Use Different Mailboxes

If you have multiple Exchange accounts in Outlook, Teams may be saving chat history to a different mailbox. In Outlook, verify that the Conversation History folder is not present under a secondary account. Switch to that account’s folder list. If found, move the folder to your primary mailbox using drag-and-drop while holding the Ctrl key.

Exchange Online Retention Policy Removed the Folder

An administrator may have applied a retention policy that deletes the Conversation History folder after a set number of days. Contact your IT administrator to check the retention policy for the Teams Chat Messages folder. Request a policy exception or a manual restoration from the Exchange admin center.

After the Conversation History folder is restored, Teams chat messages will begin syncing into Outlook again. To verify, send a test chat in Teams and press F5 in Outlook.
