Manage Recurring Calendar API Events and Their Instances

Google Calendar API recurring events have a parent rule and individual instances. Choose the resource that matches the intended edit. Updating every visible instance separately when the whole series should change creates unnecessary exceptions and can produce excessive notifications.

Understand list results

Google’s recurrence guide says a default events.list result includes single events, recurring parents, and exceptions, but not every ordinary occurrence. With singleEvents=true, individual instances are expanded and recurring parent entries are omitted.

Identify a specific occurrence

Use events.instances for instances of a given recurring event. An instance’s recurringEventId identifies its parent. Its originalStartTime identifies the scheduled occurrence even when that instance was moved to another actual start time.

Do not identify an exception solely by its current displayed hour or summary. Those can change, while the documented original-start relationship preserves its identity within the recurrence.

Verify the chosen mutation scope

For one exception, retrieve the instance and use its identifier in the authorized edit. For a whole-series change, follow the parent-level workflow instead of looping over instances. A this-and-following change needs the documented recurrence strategy rather than an improvised mass edit. Review the parent rule, affected occurrence, neighboring instances, and guest-update consequences after a controlled test. Keep deleted exceptions and pagination in the synchronization design. A successful recurring-event implementation preserves parent and occurrence relationships and verifies the intended scope, without assuming that a default list response is a complete list of every future meeting or that identical titles represent independent events.
