Install Google Meet as a Desktop Web App

Google Meet’s desktop progressive web app provides a dedicated meeting window without creating a different meeting service. Google says the web app and browser version have the same features. Installing it can make the meeting easier to find, but it does not add a paid feature or change your organization’s permissions.

Install from the official site

On a computer, open the official Meet website in Chrome. Use the installation icon in the address bar when it is offered, and follow the browser’s installation prompt. Google’s instructions cover Windows, macOS, ChromeOS, and Linux. Chrome need not be the default browser, but it must be open for installation.

Open the intended meeting

Launch Meet from the app dock or launcher. You can also open the official site or a meeting’s green room in Chrome and choose the browser’s option to open Google Meet in the app. When following a Calendar invitation, verify the meeting in the green room before opening its app window.

Keep browser requirements in view

The app updates through Chrome updates, so an installed icon does not establish that the underlying browser is current. Follow your normal approved browser-update process and reopen the app when necessary. Camera, microphone, screen-sharing, account, and organization restrictions still apply. Test the expected devices before an important call rather than reinstalling the app to address an unrelated admission problem. Use Google’s official installation route; a third-party executable advertising extra Meet capabilities is unnecessary for this web app. If installation is managed or unavailable, a supported browser remains an appropriate way to use the meeting.
