The language selected for Google Meet live captions should match the speech you want recognized. Choosing a different language is not the same as translating speech into that language. Establish which task you need before changing settings, especially in a meeting where participants alternate between languages or regional varieties.
Choose the language for recognition
On a computer, join the meeting and turn on captions from Captions and translation. Open the dropdown on the left of the caption tray and select the appropriate available language. Google lists supported languages and marks some varieties as beta. Use the specific listed variety when it matches the conversation rather than assuming every regional option behaves identically.
Verify with a short spoken sample
Ask the current speaker to say a normal sentence. Check whether the caption text follows that speech. If it appears unrelated, confirm the selected language and whether the speaker has changed languages. Improve turn taking and ask for important terms to be repeated when necessary. Changing the language cannot recover speech that was not captured while your captions were off.
Separate captions from translation
If you want to read another language, check the separate Translated captions feature and its eligibility requirements. Its settings include source and destination languages; ordinary live captions do not provide that pair of translation choices. Google’s current instructions also note that captions adjust automatically when Speech Translation is active, so inspect the meeting’s actual controls before forcing a setting. For a multilingual session, agree how speakers will announce language changes and confirm critical instructions in an accessible written form. Verify the result after each change rather than assuming one language choice covers the entire discussion.
