How to Use Gmail Offline and Choose How Much Mail to Keep

2026年10月29日 by wisechecker

Gmail offline lets you read, search, and prepare replies using mail saved in a particular browser on a particular computer. It does not make your entire server mailbox available everywhere without a connection.

Use a suitable computer and browser

Google’s Gmail offline feature requires Chrome in a normal browser window. It does not work in Incognito or Guest mode. Use a trusted personal or approved work computer, because copies of messages and attachments can be stored locally.

For a work or school account, the administrator must permit offline access. Enabling it for one account does not enable it for every account or every browser profile on the computer.

Choose the saved-mail scope

While online, open Gmail, then Settings, See all settings, and Offline. Select Enable offline mail, choose the number of days of mail to keep and the attachment option, and save the changes. Review the local-data security choice shown for your account.

Let synchronization complete before disconnecting. Keep Chrome open when you expect new mail to synchronize. Gmail’s usable browser-storage quota is not necessarily the same as the computer’s total free disk space.

Test reading and sending behavior

Before relying on offline access for travel, verify a few needed messages and attachments within the chosen period. Offline search covers saved material. Attachments available offline need to be downloaded and opened in an appropriate application; Gmail does not provide its normal attachment preview offline.

A message sent while offline goes to the Outbox and is sent automatically when the connection returns. Review queued work before reconnecting if you changed your mind. Do not use offline Send as a harmless rehearsal. Keep an independent, approved backup where required; browser site data is a working local store that can be lost when the profile or data is removed.
