Gmail’s reading pane displays message content alongside or below the inbox list on a computer. You can turn it off if you prefer opening messages in the usual full view. This setting changes presentation; it does not create a second mailbox or download a separate message copy.
Enable and position the reading pane
- In Gmail on a computer, open Settings, then See all settings.
- Select the Inbox tab and find Reading pane.
- Select Enable reading pane.
- Choose an available split arrangement, such as Right of inbox or Below inbox, then save changes.
Gmail also exposes relevant view controls through Quick settings. A narrow window may make a side-by-side arrangement less comfortable; try the below-inbox position rather than shrinking text excessively.
Turn it off or return to an unsplit view
Return to the same Reading pane settings and clear Enable reading pane, then save. If you only want to change the current arrangement, inspect the available split options, including No split, rather than disabling unrelated features.
Use one familiar message to compare the result. Switching views should not archive, delete, or move that message. If the inbox count changes, examine its read state and the current layout instead of assuming the pane removed mail.
Check read state and safe handling
A pane is a way of displaying message content, so do not assume that selecting a message is always equivalent to leaving it unopened. Check the read behavior offered in your current settings and verify with harmless test mail. Other synchronized clients may also change read state.
Previewing an unexpected message is not a reason to open its attachments or follow its links. The sender’s request still needs the same scrutiny. Reading-pane setup is a web interface feature; mobile Gmail has a different layout. If an individual email is clipped or badly formatted inside the pane, open its appropriate full view and inspect that message separately rather than changing every account setting.
