Transfer a Google Brand Account’s primary ownership while both the current and intended owners can still access their own accounts. Do not begin by deleting the departing owner’s Google Account, removing every collaborator, or moving the channel into another account.
Check the ownership system before inviting anyone
Open myaccount.google.com/brandaccounts, select the correct brand, and inspect Manage permissions. Confirm the intended YouTube channel and current primary owner. A similarly named channel or personal account is not sufficient identification.
YouTube Studio’s channel permissions are a different system. Its Owner role does not transfer underlying ownership. YouTube recommends channel permissions for ordinary collaboration, so do not switch systems merely to add an editor. If channel permissions prevent a necessary ownership change, review YouTube’s documented opt-out and re-invitation consequences before proceeding; changing systems can affect existing delegates.
Add the new owner and allow the required time
- Using the current authorized owner’s account, invite the intended recipient through Brand Account permissions with the appropriate ownership role.
- Have the recipient accept using the exact Google Account intended for the handover.
- Keep both accounts available while the ownership waiting requirements are satisfied.
- Return to Manage permissions, choose the intended person’s role, select Primary owner, and confirm Transfer when available.
Google documents seven-day requirements for ownership changes. A conservative handover is to make the recipient an owner, wait at least seven days after acceptance, and ensure the person making the change has also been an owner for at least seven days. Do not repeatedly remove and re-invite the recipient to bypass an eligibility error. Check the current official requirements and displayed role if transfer is unavailable.
Verify access before removing the old owner
Have the recipient sign in independently, select the correct brand and channel, and confirm the primary-owner entry. Check necessary Studio access and other collaborators separately. Record the completed handover before removing any obsolete access.
Do not share the departing owner’s password as a shortcut. Keep any required transition access until the verified handover is complete, then reduce privileges deliberately. If you only want to delegate uploads or moderation, use a suitable channel permission instead; that task does not require changing primary ownership.
