A Google prompt requires an eligible phone signed in to the relevant Google Account and connected to the internet. Check those conditions before resetting the phone or removing the account.
Confirm the account on the phone
Read the complete account address on both the sign-in request and the phone. A familiar avatar does not prove they are the same identity.
Google’s current guide says prompts can arrive on Android phones signed in to the account. On iPhone, its 2-Step Verification guide lists signed-in Google apps such as Gmail, Google Photos, YouTube, or the Google app.
Check connectivity and notification conditions
- Connect the phone to working Wi-Fi or cellular data.
- Check whether Do Not Disturb is hiding the notification.
- Open an eligible signed-in Google app when appropriate.
- On Android, ensure Google Play services is current.
- Return to the legitimate sign-in screen and resend the prompt if offered.
Allow a few seconds for delivery. Do not remove the account or clear the phone’s data merely because the first notification did not appear; that can remove a useful signed-in verification device.
Handle the correct request
If the prompt says it expired, return to the request you initiated and resend through that flow. Confirm any matching number only for your own active sign-in.
If you receive a prompt without trying to sign in, reject it and review account activity. An unexpected prompt is not something to approve as a troubleshooting test.
Use a backup when the phone is unavailable
Select Try another way or the equivalent option and use an established backup method. A phone that is lost, offline, or signed out cannot be made eligible by repeatedly requesting notifications.
To stop prompts on a retired phone, follow Google’s guidance to sign the account out of that device, after confirming that another method is available. Merely changing a recovery phone number does not establish that all signed-in prompt devices have been removed.
Organization policies may affect the available choices. Contact the administrator if a managed account requires a particular corporate device or approved authentication method.
