You can restore an ordinary deleted Gmail message while it is still in Trash. Google’s standard guidance describes a window of up to 30 days after deletion, with permanent deletion possible sooner. Act on the actual message rather than waiting for the window to expire.
Locate the message in Trash
- Open Gmail on a computer and confirm the account.
- In the left navigation, expand More and open Trash.
- Find the intended sender, subject, and date.
- If necessary, search with
in:anywhereand a distinctive message detail.
Trash can contain multiple messages from a conversation. Expand and inspect the relevant items before selecting a large group. Do not use Empty Trash or Delete forever while trying to recover mail.
Move the selected mail out of Trash
Select the intended message and use Move to, choosing Inbox or another suitable destination. Verify that it is available outside Trash and that important attachments can still be located.
If your goal is keeping the mail without cluttering Inbox, you can organize or archive it after recovery. Removing a custom label does not perform the same operation as restoring a message from Trash.
Check why it was deleted
Review filters with Delete it and any synchronized client that may be deleting the same mail again. Restoring the message without correcting the cause can leave it vulnerable to another automatic action.
If you cannot find it in Trash, check Spam, All Mail, the correct account, and conversation contents before concluding it was permanently removed. Discarded drafts are different: they are not normally recovered from Trash like received email.
Do not assume that every cleanup tool sends items to ordinary Gmail Trash. Some storage-management deletion workflows can remove content permanently. Read the actual confirmation before using them.
For work or school mail already outside the user’s recovery window, contact the administrator promptly about any eligible recovery options. Do not pay an unsolicited recovery service or grant mailbox access to a tool promising to restore every deleted message.
