Use Apple Mail’s Google account setup to read Gmail through Google’s supported sign-in flow. Do not treat a normal Google password pasted into an old manual server dialog as equivalent to OAuth authorization. Preserve any local-only mail before replacing an existing connection.
Choose Google in the relevant Apple setup
On a current iPhone or iPad, Apple’s documented route begins in Settings, Apps, Mail, then Mail Accounts and Add Account. Enter the Gmail address and select Google where the provider choice is shown.
On a Mac, open Mail and choose Mail, then Add Account. Enter the address or choose the provider from the offered list. If the Google account already exists in Internet Accounts, check whether Mail is enabled for that account instead of adding an unnecessary duplicate.
Complete Google’s authorization
- Confirm the genuine Google sign-in context.
- Use the intended primary account address.
- Complete required verification and any organization sign-in steps.
- Review and authorize the appropriate access.
Google recommends its supported sign-in route. Modern iPhone and iPad setup generally does not require an app password; a missing legacy app-password option is not a reason to disable account protection.
Check synchronization and local preservation
Compare a known message with Gmail on the web, then test a harmless new incoming and outgoing message. Check the correct account and From address if Apple Mail contains several mailboxes.
Gmail labels can appear as folders, and deleting or discarding items in a synchronized client can affect the server. Test the relevant behavior with disposable mail before reorganizing important records.
Apple warns that removing an account can remove downloaded messages from the device. Verify server copies and preserve local-only mail and unsent drafts first. Menu names differ across operating-system versions, so use the current Apple guide for your device rather than blindly applying an older Preferences screenshot. For managed accounts blocked by policy, ask the administrator for the approved client and authorization route.
