A branded Gmail layout should remain understandable on a narrow screen and when images do not load. Start with a simple message structure, then add branding without making the essential action depend on decoration.
Build the content in the layout editor
On desktop Gmail, open Compose and Layouts. Select a suitable default or saved layout, then use Edit layout. Set the logo, colors, fonts, and accurate footer details. Review every existing button link; a sample destination should never survive into a real message.
Use text for the main announcement, date, and requested action. Add useful alternative text to images, as Google recommends. A logo or promotional image should not be the only place a recipient can discover a deadline or contact address.
Preview more than the desktop design
Use the editor’s Preview controls for mobile, tablet, and desktop. Inspect line wrapping, button labels, contrast, spacing, and whether a long address or heading dominates a narrow column. Reduce competing columns or decorative content when the message becomes hard to scan.
Preview with realistic text rather than only short placeholders. A layout that looks balanced with a two-word heading may behave differently with the actual campaign title. Keep the message concise enough to understand without zooming into an image.
Test the received message before the campaign
Insert the layout into Gmail and inspect a controlled test on the clients your audience uses. Google notes that some Outlook versions render HTML using Microsoft Word, so the Gmail editor’s appearance is not a universal delivery guarantee.
After insertion, use the layout’s Edit control to change its contents; the current guide says the layout cannot be edited directly as ordinary compose text. Recheck after every meaningful revision. Confirm the final sender, recipients, links, and any unsubscribe behavior separately from the visual design. A good-looking template is not evidence that the campaign’s data or recipient list is correct.
