If Gmail still appears not to receive mail after a storage cleanup, separate three questions: has the account’s capacity updated, can a newly sent message arrive, and were earlier attempts already rejected? Those situations require different checks.
Verify the actual storage change
Open the official storage view in the intended account. Check whether deleted items remain in Trash and whether Drive, Photos, backups, or another service still consumes the space.
Google notes that accounting after large deletions can take up to 48–72 hours to update. A purchased storage upgrade has a different documented activation period, up to 24 hours. These are not guarantees that every delivery issue will resolve merely by waiting that long.
Test a genuinely new delivery
- Ask a trusted contact to send one harmless message after the account shows available capacity.
- Confirm the exact recipient address.
- Search Gmail on the web, including Spam and Trash where appropriate.
- Ask the sender for any bounce or deferral notice.
A message that was rejected while storage was full may need to be sent again. Reopening an old thread or refreshing a phone cannot make that previous failed attempt become a new delivery.
Investigate the remaining symptom
If the test arrives online but not on one device, investigate synchronization. If it appears under another label or category, review sorting and filters. If only one sender fails, compare that sender’s delivery evidence.
If the official meter remains wrong beyond the relevant processing period, use Google’s storage support route and provide the account, cleanup or purchase time, and transaction evidence privately. Do not buy the same upgrade repeatedly to force activation.
For urgent mail, use an approved alternative communication channel while the underlying issue is resolved. Avoid additional irreversible cleanup without checking what still uses space. Storage accounting, sender retries, and device refresh are separate mechanisms, so retain one clear test example for each rather than changing several unrelated settings.
