If Google rejects an alternate email, check whether the address meets the rules before troubleshooting the browser. An address that already belongs to another Google Account cannot simply be attached to the current one.
Check the three common mismatches
- A Gmail address: the ordinary Add alternate email flow requires a non-Gmail address.
- An address already linked elsewhere: it may identify another Google Account or already be attached to one.
- A managed account: your work or school administrator may control which email settings are available.
Use the complete email address, including the domain. A display name in the account chooser is not enough to identify which account you are editing.
Investigate an existing Google identity
You can have a Google Account with an email hosted by another provider and no Gmail inbox. Past use of YouTube, Drive, or another Google service may explain why the address is already linked.
Try the normal Google sign-in or official recovery flow for that address. Use the Google Account password, which may differ from the password for the external mailbox. Do not ask the external email provider to reset a Google password.
Do not delete first and investigate later
If the address belongs to another account you own, inventory its data and dependencies before considering changes. Linking an alternate email is not an account-merge operation. Removing or deleting the wrong account can affect files, purchases, or third-party access.
For an organization-owned domain, ask the administrator whether there is a managed/personal account conflict. Do not move employer data into a personal account to work around the restriction.
If the address is accepted but verification fails
That is a different stage of the process. Confirm the spelling, check the mailbox and spam folder, and use the verification message for the request you initiated. Avoid opening an unrelated verification message simply because it mentions Google.
If you cannot access that mailbox, choose another address you control. If the settings page itself will not load, investigate the browser separately; clearing site data will not remove a legitimate address-ownership restriction.
