Google Sheets Opens With the Wrong Google Account: Choose the File’s Intended Identity

A Sheets link can open under a different signed-in Google Account from the one the owner authorized. Resolve that identity mismatch before requesting new permissions or copying the file into a personal workspace.

Check the account used by the failing file

Inspect the account indicator in the browser and the access message. Compare it with the address the owner shared with. Your default Google Account, Chrome profile, and account selected in another Gmail tab can be different.

If the file was shared with an organization address, an unrelated personal account does not inherit those permissions. An alias, group membership, or secondary account should be checked through the organization’s normal access process.

Open the link in the intended account context

Use the account switcher or an appropriate separate browser profile, then reopen the known file link. Confirm the file identifier and account again before editing. A separate profile can also help keep personal and work sessions distinguishable.

Do not sign out of every account or clear browser data as the first response, especially if offline edits exist. Offline access has its own profile and account requirements; a fresh online context will not necessarily contain unsynchronized local changes.

Verify access without broadening sharing

If the correct account still lacks access, ask the owner to review the specific user or group role and any organizational restrictions. A successful view in someone else’s account does not authorize using that account’s session.

Once the file opens, verify the intended editing role and a harmless existing value before making substantive changes. Avoid creating an unauthorized personal copy of work information. For support, provide the account address and file identifier through the approved channel, with unnecessary spreadsheet data concealed.
