Opening an Excel workbook in Google Sheets does not always convert it into a native Sheets file. Decide whether you intend to edit the original Office file or create a separate converted copy before making changes.
Identify the file format you are editing
Inspect the file name, format indicator, and Drive entry. Google’s current guidance supports editing an Excel file through Sheets while saving changes in the original Microsoft Office format. That means edits can affect the shared workbook other people already use.
Do not assume that seeing the Sheets interface guarantees you are working on an isolated copy. Preserve the original according to your normal backup process before testing compatibility-sensitive changes.
Choose conversion when its consequences are acceptable
File and Save as Google Sheets creates a separate native file in the documented conversion workflow. You can then inspect Sheets-specific functionality while retaining the original Excel workbook.
Check formulas, named ranges, charts, data validation, protection, and external connections that matter to the workbook. Excel macros and product-specific features should not be assumed to execute identically in Sheets. A successful conversion is only the beginning of that verification.
Keep collaboration on one agreed version
If the team must continue using Excel, verify the edited Office-format file in the target application. If the team adopts a native Sheets version, agree on its location, sharing, and cutover before replacing links.
Use clear names so the Excel original and converted spreadsheet are distinguishable. Do not delete the original merely because a conversion completed. Test a known calculation and a representative output in whichever format will be authoritative. The right choice depends on required features and collaboration needs, not simply on which application opened the attachment first.
