If a Google passkey QR sign-in fails, check both devices and the passkey itself. Scanning a QR code is only one part of the process; it does not establish that the phone holds a usable credential for the selected account.
Restart the intended sign-in once
Open Google’s legitimate sign-in page on the computer and confirm the username. If the previous request expired or was cancelled, start a fresh request there and scan its current code.
Do not reuse an image from a message, a different browser tab, or another person’s login. An unexpected QR request should not be approved as a troubleshooting test.
Check the phone’s credential
- Confirm that the passkey belongs to the same Google Account.
- Check which device or credential manager holds it.
- Enable the phone’s screen lock.
- Check whether a newly enrolled method is still awaiting trust or approval.
- Use the phone’s normal unlock method when the passkey flow requests it.
Google says a newly created passkey may need up to seven days before sign-in availability. An already trusted method may permit an approval option, but that is not a reason to create several replacement passkeys.
Check the connection and environment
Keep the phone near the computer and enable the Bluetooth required by Google’s cross-device instructions. Use supported, current operating systems and browsers, and follow any connection prompt shown.
On some systems, private browsing can limit passkey use. An organization can also restrict the sign-in environment. Ask the administrator about a managed device instead of disabling security software or overriding policy.
Separate failure to scan from failure to authenticate
If the camera cannot recognize the code, check that the entire current code is visible and the display is readable. If scanning works but no appropriate passkey is available, investigate the account and credential storage instead.
If Google offers another established sign-in method, use it to regain access and inspect the passkey settings. Avoid removing the last working credential or resetting the phone merely to retry a QR handoff. Record the stage and non-sensitive error so support can address the actual failure.
