Receiving a blocked sender’s message in Gmail’s Spam is expected. Gmail’s block control routes future mail there; it is not a server-side rejection or a promise that no trace of the message will reach your account. Check the location and exact sender before judging whether it worked.
Distinguish Spam delivery from inbox delivery
Open the message and inspect its Spam status. If you found it through a broad search or Spam review, the block may be doing exactly what it is designed to do.
If the message is genuinely in Inbox, compare its full From address with the blocked entry in Settings, Filters and blocked addresses. A familiar display name can conceal a different address, and several services may send under similar names.
Check rules and later mailbox actions
- Confirm that the intended address is still on the blocked list.
- Review filters that match the message and any authorized app that manages mail.
- Check whether you or another authorized user moved the message out of Spam.
- Use a harmless controlled example where appropriate rather than repeatedly interacting with unwanted mail.
Do not use an unexpected message’s links to manage the block. Gmail’s own settings provide the relevant list. For a confusing delivery route, share headers privately with trusted support if needed.
Choose an additional action only when suitable
For legitimate subscriptions, blocking does not remove your address from the list. Use an appropriate unsubscribe process if you knowingly subscribed and trust the sender. For unsolicited bulk mail or deception, use spam or phishing reporting instead of visiting an unsubscribe page inside the scam.
Do not empty Spam automatically while trying to locate a specific important message; review the relevant examples first. Conversely, do not mark all mail from a blocked sender Not spam just to make a count disappear.
If the sender is rotating addresses or threatening you, preserve useful evidence and use the relevant abuse-reporting process. No single address block can guarantee that a person cannot contact you through another account or channel.
