Google now describes an option for eligible accounts to change an existing @gmail.com account email to another @gmail.com address. Availability must be checked inside your account. This is a change to the address of an existing identity, not a merger with another Gmail account.
Check whether the option is available
- Sign in to the intended Google Account.
- Open Personal info, then Email and Google Account email.
- Look for Change Google Account email.
- If it is absent, read the available options for that account rather than following an old workaround.
You can also reach the account-email setting through the official link in Google’s help page. For a work or school address, ask the administrator about renaming the managed account.
Prepare before confirming
Review Google’s service-specific impact guide, especially if you use a Chromebook, Sign in with Google on external websites, or Chrome Remote Desktop. Back up necessary data and check that you can recover the account. Local or offline data and application settings require attention even when cloud data remains in the account.
Choose a genuinely available username. An address already used by another account, or previously used and deleted, is not available simply because you want to rename your account to it.
Make the change and verify it
When the option is offered, enter the new username, review Google’s confirmation, and complete the steps shown. Then return to the account-email setting to check which address is now primary.
Send a test message to the new address and check the account’s key services. Keep the original mailbox session available until you have confirmed that external sign-ins and devices still reach the expected data.
What happens to the old address
Google states that the former Gmail address remains an alternate address for the same account. Mail to both addresses reaches the mailbox, and the old address is not released for another person to register. Existing cloud data remains associated with the account.
This means the change is not a way to make the old address disappear completely or stop all messages addressed to it. Google also applies frequency and lifetime limits to creating new Gmail account addresses. Read those current limits before confirming a change you may later want to repeat.
If your goal is only to change the name recipients see, edit the Gmail sender name instead. That is a different setting and does not require changing the email address.
