Unwanted promotion alerts can come from Gmail’s notification scope, a label setting, or another mail app. Moving messages into a category and deciding which messages trigger alerts are separate choices.
Identify the account and notification source
Open the alert and confirm its app and account. Check the message’s category in Gmail. An advertisement in Primary is different from a message already in Promotions that is still generating a sound.
If Apple Mail, Outlook, or a browser produced the alert, Gmail’s mobile notification setting will not control that other source. Review its account-specific alert settings separately.
Review Gmail’s notification level
On desktop, Google’s new-mail notification guidance covers Primary when inbox categories are enabled; Important mail is another selectable scope. On mobile, inspect the account’s Email notifications level instead of assuming every device follows one desktop setting.
On Android, review Manage labels for additional label-specific alerts and the label’s sync setting. Google says high-priority notification settings override other label notification settings. Use the combination deliberately rather than enabling every label and hoping category tabs alone will silence them.
Keep delivery and attention settings separate
If the message genuinely belongs in another category, move it intentionally and review any prompt about future messages from that sender. Do not reclassify essential receipts or security mail simply to reduce noise.
Test the change with new messages and confirm that important mail still alerts. Unsubscribe from legitimate marketing you no longer want through a trusted route; report suspicious spam rather than interacting with its links. Neither action requires deleting the whole Promotions category. If alerts continue, record the app, account, category, priority level, and Android label or system channel involved. That evidence helps find the source without muting every mailbox or changing how mail is delivered.
