Before sending a Gmail reply, inspect the quoted history as well as your new text. Content hidden behind an ellipsis can still be part of the outgoing reply. A shortened on-screen view is not a reliable privacy check.
Expand the relevant quoted section
Open the intended reply draft and check the original message it answers. Use the available trimmed-content or quoted-history control to inspect the older text. In a long exchange, verify the dates and senders so you do not keep an unrelated earlier discussion.
Do not confuse expanding a received message for reading with editing the content in your outgoing draft. The recipient will receive the material included in the reply you actually send, not simply the portion that was visible in your inbox.
Keep only the context the recipient needs
Within the reply editor, select the unwanted quoted section and remove it carefully. Check that you have not selected the whole message or deleted your new response. If an edit removes the wrong text, use the editor’s Undo promptly while the change is still available.
Review personal information, internal comments, addresses, signatures, and any pasted material. Adding someone new to the recipients makes this check especially important. A short sentence at the top does not make the rest of a confidential thread safe to share.
Use deliberate inline quotation
If you need only a particular passage, Google’s writing guide describes copying the relevant text into the reply and using the quote formatting control. Put your own response outside that quoted section so the source text and your additions remain distinguishable.
A quote border is formatting, not an access restriction. It does not stop the recipient copying the contents. Keep quotation accurate and avoid making an edited passage appear to be the sender’s complete original statement.
Perform a final outgoing review
Check recipients, current text, and included history before Send. If the draft is too complicated to audit confidently, a new concise message with the permitted context may be clearer. Do not rely on Gmail automatically trimming repeated text to remove information you did not intend to disclose; presentation and actual inclusion are different questions.
