When Gmail is not saving a draft, preserve the text before closing the window or resetting the app. Automatic saving normally works in the background, but visible text is not proof that the latest version has reached the online mailbox.
Keep a private copy first
Copy important unsent text to an appropriate private location while it is still visible. Keep any necessary attachment originals separately. Do not clear browser storage, remove the account, or reinstall the app as the first step with the only copy still inside it.
Record the warning and the account you are editing. If the draft is open elsewhere, avoid changing both copies at once. Preserve the version you need before trying to decide which window is current.
Check connection and synchronization
Confirm that the device can reach a normal website and that Gmail is online. Check any save or connection notice in the composer. For Android, review the selected account’s Sync Gmail setting and the device’s applicable synchronization controls.
After preserving the text, inspect Drafts through the same account in the web interface or another available surface. This helps distinguish a local app display from what was actually saved. Do not send the unfinished message merely to test whether saving works.
Review both storage locations
Check Google Account storage and the device’s free space separately. Gmail, Drive, and Photos can use the account’s shared allowance. Low device storage can also prevent the Android app from synchronizing. An attachment still uploading is another condition to inspect.
Resolve the actual limit deliberately. Do not empty all Trash or delete large amounts of mail without checking what you need to keep. A storage warning alone does not prove that Google automatically deleted a particular draft.
Use resets only after preserving the work
Google’s Android sync guide warns that clearing Gmail’s storage can erase message drafts and other settings. Treat that as a later troubleshooting step with explicit consequences, not a harmless refresh.
Once the connection or storage issue is resolved, confirm the required draft is present and contains the expected text before closing the original window. If the problem continues, report the app version, device, timing, and error without exposing private message contents.
