If a Gmail draft disappears, preserve any text still visible in an open window before refreshing, signing out, or clearing app data. Then check the account and Drafts label. A missing draft is different from a message that was sent or deliberately discarded.
Protect the remaining copy
If the text is still visible in a composer, copy it to a private, appropriate local document or another approved location. Keep that window open while you investigate. Do not paste confidential mail into a public troubleshooting form or an online recovery service.
Note the account, subject, intended recipient, and approximate editing time. If several browser windows or devices were involved, inspect each before closing it. Avoid editing competing copies while you determine which one contains the latest text.
Find the saved or sent version
- Confirm the full Google Account address in the active profile.
- Open the Drafts label and inspect likely subjects and recipients.
- Check the original conversation for an unfinished reply.
- Check Sent in case the message was sent rather than lost.
- If you used another mail client, inspect its draft location and the web mailbox separately.
Gmail normally saves work automatically, but an interrupted connection or a different app’s draft behavior can complicate what you see. A message title alone does not prove you found the newest version; inspect the contents.
Understand discarded drafts
The discard control is different from closing the composer to keep a draft. Google’s missing-message guide says a discarded draft cannot be recovered. Do not assume it has the same thirty-day Trash protection as an ordinary deleted email.
If an immediate undo option is still displayed, review and use it promptly when appropriate. Do not depend on a later recovery promise or a third-party service claiming it can restore any discarded draft.
Investigate recurrence without erasing evidence
Check connection, synchronization, storage warnings, and the specific app involved. Preserve important unsent text before restarting or resetting anything. If you report the issue, provide non-sensitive timing and app details rather than your full draft or login credentials.
