If you cannot open Copilot Chat in VS Code, first distinguish a hidden view from a view that opens but fails to load. The current Chat view normally opens in the Secondary Side Bar. Clicking an old Activity Bar location or a completion-status control may therefore be the wrong action for your version and layout.
Key takeaways
- Use the title-bar Chat menu > Open Chat to test the current view.
- Show the Secondary Side Bar before investigating a missing panel.
- Check AI enablement, account access, compatibility, and logs when the view is unavailable or blank.
Why the Copilot Sidebar May Not Open
VS Code remembers view locations and visibility. A hidden side bar, moved view, or custom shortcut can make Chat appear missing even while inline completions work. An empty window also has different default Secondary Side Bar visibility from a window with an open folder. See VS Code layout controls.
A missing AI interface can instead be intentional: chat.disableAIFeatures disables and hides AI features and Copilot components. The title-bar Chat menu has its own visibility setting, chat.commandCenter.enabled. Inspect the effective settings and any policy before changing a value. The primary sidebar’s left/right location is not a documented universal repair for Chat, and changing a Linux title-bar style is not established here as a fix. See the AI settings reference.
When Chat opens with an error or blank content, consider the actual extension, account, or connection message. Neither a white area nor an icon’s color proves cache corruption or a webview failure. GitHub also documents compatibility requirements between current Copilot Chat and VS Code releases; inspect your installed versions. See Copilot troubleshooting.
Steps to Open the Copilot Chat View
- Save work and use the explicit Chat action. Select the Chat menu in the VS Code title bar, then Open Chat. The documented default shortcut is
Ctrl+Alt+Ion Windows/Linux orControl+Command+Ion macOS. Try the menu first so a custom keybinding cannot obscure the result. See opening the Chat view. - Show the side bar. Use View > Appearance > Secondary Side Bar, or run
View: Toggle Secondary Side Bar Visibility. If you previously moved Chat, look in the other side bar or Panel. Drag a visible Chat view to the preferred location. Avoid a global layout reset when simply showing or moving the view resolves the issue. - Check a missing menu. Open Settings and search for
chat.commandCenter.enabledandchat.disableAIFeatures. Inspect User and Workspace scopes and the active profile. If a setting was unintentionally changed by you, restore the intended value. If it is managed, request the authorized access rather than bypassing the policy. - Inspect Copilot’s installed state. Open Extensions and find the required GitHub-published Copilot components for your build. Read whether each is disabled, incompatible, or has an update available. Enable an accidentally disabled component in the intended workspace and follow an applicable update prompt. Installing an arbitrary older version is not equivalent to updating. See extension management.
- Read the account state. If Chat asks you to sign in or reports unavailable access, verify the intended GitHub account and its entitlement. Use the offered official sign-in flow and review its permissions. Working inline suggestions do not by themselves prove that all Chat features are available.
- Reload once, then separate visibility from service access. After saving your files, run
Developer: Reload Window. Reopen Chat through the menu. If the input appears, try a harmless question without attaching private files. Record whether the view opens and whether a response arrives; those are two different results.
If Chat Still Does Not Open or Remains Blank
The menu works but the shortcut does not: open Keyboard Shortcuts through the Preferences menu and search for the Chat action. Compare its assigned key and context with the conflicting binding. Edit only the binding you intend to change. A shortcut problem does not require removing every extension.
The view opens with no usable content: run Output: Show Output Channels and inspect the Copilot Chat channel. If necessary, use Developer: Set Log Level to capture one reproduction, then restore the previous level. For connection failures, GitHub Copilot: Chat Diagnostics can show failed checks. A clean report covers only the connections it tested. See VS Code AI diagnostics.
The failure depends on another extension: temporarily disable one suspected extension, repeat the same menu action, and restore it afterward. Keep a record of the combination and versions. Do not delete extension installation folders, clear credentials, or run unverified “Clear Editor Cache” or “Reset Window State” commands.
For support, provide the editor and Copilot versions, profile, whether a folder is open, the menu result, and a redacted error excerpt. Remove tokens, private source, and personal paths before sharing logs. A reproducible view-opening failure is more useful than attributing all missing panels to a corrupted cache.
