Fix GitHub Copilot 401 Authentication Errors in VS Code Safely

A Copilot request returning HTTP 401 indicates an authentication failure for that request. It does not, by itself, establish that your subscription expired or that a personal access token must be deleted. Check the account used by Copilot, refresh that session, and inspect the remaining evidence before changing credentials or network settings.

Record the complete error, time and affected feature. An authorization error from a separate extension or external tool is not necessarily a GitHub Copilot sign-in problem.

1. Confirm Copilot’s account and access

In VS Code, open Accounts → Manage Extension Account Preferences → GitHub Copilot Chat. Choose the intended GitHub.com account for the current workspace and profile. The official setup guide supports multiple accounts; you do not need to remove every other account from the editor.

For an employer-provided seat, verify the exact GitHub username with the administrator. A similarly named personal account is not the same identity. If your organization uses GHE.com, use its documented enterprise sign-in path and the instance URL provided by the administrator.

Check the account’s actual Copilot plan through GitHub Settings → Billing & licensing → Licensing; the original billing platform uses Billing and licensing → Plans and usage. See GitHub’s plan guide. Organization-managed access is handled by the organization. Do not buy or renew a personal subscription merely because the editor displayed 401.

2. Refresh only the affected VS Code session

Save your work and pause any active agent operation. Then follow GitHub’s documented VS Code authentication procedure:

  1. Open the Accounts menu, find the affected GitHub username and select Sign out.
  2. Open the Command Palette and run Developer: Reload Window.
  3. Sign back in to the intended GitHub account when prompted. Verify which account is active in the browser before completing authorization.
  4. Return to the same workspace and profile, check the Copilot account preference again, and make one small, non-sensitive request.

Signing out may interrupt other extensions using that account, so avoid doing it during another important operation. Reloading the window is not a documented way to erase all stored authentication data.

Do not delete personal access tokens, SSH keys or Windows Credential Manager entries based on labels such as “VS Code” or “Copilot.” Those may belong to unrelated Git or automation workflows. If support identifies a specific authorization that must be revoked, review its scope and dependent applications before that separate action.

3. Check updates and network evidence without weakening protection

Install the current supported VS Code and Copilot updates through your approved update process. Check the status link in GitHub’s troubleshooting guide for a relevant incident. Repeated sign-ins will not resolve an ongoing service outage.

If diagnostics also show connection, proxy or certificate errors, use GitHub’s network troubleshooting guide. On Windows, these commands test the documented HTTPS endpoints without sending an account token:

curl.exe --verbose https://copilot-proxy.githubusercontent.com/_ping
curl.exe --verbose https://api.githubcopilot.com/_ping

An HTTP 200 response confirms only the tested route; it does not validate your account, all required endpoints or the editor’s own proxy configuration. An ICMP ping failure does not prove that HTTPS is blocked.

Give network errors to IT with the timestamp and affected environment. Keep required VPN and proxy controls enabled. Have approved certificate trust or allowlist changes handled by the administrator; do not disable TLS verification or ask for longer-lived credentials as a general fix.

4. Escalate a persistent 401 with focused diagnostics

Search the Command Palette for Chat Diagnostics and review the report. Open the GitHub Copilot or GitHub Copilot Chat output channel and locate the failure at the recorded time. The VS Code troubleshooting guide explains diagnostic collection and temporary trace logging. Restore the previous log level afterward.

Tell support which account and client versions you used, whether the targeted sign-in refresh changed anything, and whether the failure happens in every workspace or just one. Separate the initial 401 from any later quota, policy or connection message; those are different troubleshooting paths.

Review logs before sharing them. Remove credentials, cookies, private code, prompts and unnecessary local paths, then use an approved support channel. Do not post unredacted logs publicly. Recovery is confirmed by a successful permitted Copilot request, not simply by completing the browser login.
