Check Which Google Meet Features Are Restricted by Client-Side Encryption

Client-side encryption changes which Google Meet features are available. A missing control in a CSE meeting can be an expected restriction rather than a broken browser or an account mistake. Compare the intended meeting tasks with Google’s unavailable-feature list before trying to troubleshoot each absent button separately.

Check essential communication and access needs

Google lists captions, phone audio, adding people by phone, and third-party gateway interoperability as unavailable in CSE meetings. If someone depends on one of these methods, discuss an approved accessible arrangement before the session. The meeting also requires invited participants and does not provide ordinary knocking for an uninvited guest. Sending the same link again cannot remove that requirement.

Review capture and activity restrictions

Recordings, transcripts, live streams, breakout rooms, polls, Q&A, reactions, and add-ons are on Google’s unavailable list. Noise cancellation is unavailable too. A host role does not automatically override these encryption-related restrictions. If a planned workshop requires breakout discussion or a permanent transcript, redesign the approved workflow rather than promising the feature will appear after joining.

Include AI features and reporting in the plan

Google also lists adaptive audio, Ask Gemini, generated backgrounds, studio sound, and Take notes for me as unavailable. In-meeting abuse reporting is unavailable as well, so establish your organization’s appropriate reporting and assistance route beforehand. Verify the CSE shield and review the actual feature list if a control is missing. Do not disable a required encryption setting simply to make a convenient feature reappear. Escalate the conflict between the meeting’s required protection and its required functionality, and use an authorized alternative when both cannot be satisfied in the current session.
